It's a Suffolk thing

suff_1500.jpg

So many of our friends have left London over the years, and last summer our peeps SA and Y packed up their London life and moved to Suffolk. It had been on the cards for years but Covid sped things up. A few weeks ago we finally got to go for an overnight visit, and it was so nice to see them and their kids again. We began our stay with a no-cook lunch - the best kind of lunch.

suff-3_1500.jpg

Since we saw them last summer there’s been a new addition to the family - Ruby.

suff-4_1500.jpg

She and Mr Famapa became friends immediately.

suff-5_1500.jpg

Even though he lost her ball.

suff-2_1500.jpg

Digression. Don’t know what these are, but they were pretty.

suff-7_1500.jpg

In the early evening we went for delicious pizzas at @theshedsframlingham and the super relaxed setting was just perfect.

So crazy that our kids are or are close to becoming teenagers. Seeing how much this young lady has changed in the past year is quite something. It’s Oomoo’s turn soon (well, not that soon, we’re 18 months away…). Gulp.

suff-10_1500.jpg

One middle aged lady with a camera was enjoying the planting very much.

suff-9_1500.jpg

Very much.

suff-12_1500.jpg

After the meal some chose to digest their meal playing football.

suff-13_1500.jpg

Nut jobs.

suff-16_1500.jpg

We were incredibly lucky with the weather; this summer has been British to say the least. Maybe it’s a Brexit thing? Luckily the fire pit at SA and Y’s made it possible for us to continue sitting outside for the rest of the evening.

suff-17_1500.jpg

What you looking at Ruby?

suff-18_1500.jpg

Whatever it was - a cuddle was even better.

suffo-6_1500.jpg

Y going in to get provisions.

suff-19_1500.jpg

It got late.

suff-20_1500.jpg

Click click. We started playing the Intro Game where you have to guess the song from the first beat of the intro. SA and I were very good, and I may say so myself. It’s amazing that you can recognise a song in a second or two. Of course we’re talking 80’s and 90’s music here. We didn’t attempt any songs from after then.

suff-21_1500.jpg

The fire had me mesmerised in between.

suff-22_1500.jpg

Day 2. How’s this for a conservatory/dining room? Drool.

suff-23_1500.jpg

It was way too hot to sit in though.

suff-24_1500.jpg

Had a look through SA’s interior books, and this portrait of an elderly couple in the Apartamento book, made me fast forward a few decades - I really like her style.

suff-25_1500.jpg

Stop Hammock time.

suff-27_1500.jpg

Summer and friends are the best.

Hope we get to see them again soon.

Not a usual Sunday

ready_1500.jpg

Still hot the following day. We decided to walk up to the nearby woods and check out some old deserted army barracks.

click_1500.jpg

We thought that this little bunker might have been a coal store, but we’re no experts. We are at taking pictures though. HA HA

inside_1500.jpg

I walked into this building on my own only to be told to get the hell out immediately as the floor was covered in broken asbestos. Handy to have a friend who’s an architect who can spot that sort of thing, eh?

building_1500.jpg

What is it about abandoned buildings that’s so alluring? Insert shrug emoji here.

cows_1500.jpg

Walking back towards the house we came across this herd of cows. Care to share any tips on herd immunity guys? GUYS??

in_the_water_1500.jpg

Knowing that it would be hot during our stay in the Cotswolds I did some research on places to swim nearby. I found some river spots online that looked promising, but my uncle-in-law said that there was also a lake that would be much quieter, and therefor less busy. He was not wrong. When I went in the water I totally forgot about everything else and just kept swimming out in a straight line for about 15 minutes. It didn’t occur to me to check on how Oomoo was doing, it was like I was in a trance. It had been over three months since I’d been in the water, and being back made me very selfish. I finally remembered and turned around to see how he was doing, but fortunately Mr Famapa had gone in with him, even though he hadn’t brought swimming trunks. Bad mamma!

The Ladies Pond opened in July but I had no interest in trying to book one of the allotted time slots, all of which would sell out within seconds of being released. Besides, it’s the cold water I’m after. Anyway, we left the lake just as groups of younger people started arriving with crates of beer. Perfect timing.

field_1500.jpg

Nothing says a field in August as much as this picture.

reading_1500.jpg

Finally, two pictures from the following day; L reading, with a compulsory cup of tea in the morning…

window_1500.jpg

… and Oomoo through the window in the evening. So grateful for being able to go to this lovely place. Until the next time!

A hot Saturday in August

stairs_1500.jpg

7.07am, our first full day in the house in the Cotwolds.
Oomoo crept down the stairs as quietly as he could as we were the only ones awake.

7.12am
We were soon joined by R, and I left them to chat and read on their Kindles. I stopped using mine years ago, but in lockdown it came into it’s own with Oomoo being such a bookworm. Saves us a lot of money, and bookshelf space.

mug_1500.jpg

7.32am
Can’t start the day without a huge cup of tea. This is cup is one fine specimen made by my father-in-law’s brother, who’s a potter, and lives next door. Much fancier than my regular morning mug at home from Ikea.

slide2_1500.jpg

12.17pm
It was +31c or something, so out came this slide, which R and Oomoo kept cool with.

4.09pm
This day felt like such a treat. Usually when we go away I feel that we have to do something or go somewhere, but it was way too hot to move, so we stayed under this tree most of the day, reading, chatting and napping. It felt like the first day in ages we could really relax.

throw_1500.jpg

5.16pm
R’s older sister finally joined us after a long drive from Cornwall, and we thought it best to all go for a walk and a short game of frisbee, as the sun and heat wasn’t as intense anymore.

5.27pm
The little village where we were staying - from a distance.

walk_1500.jpg

5.51pm
Walky walk.

shadow_1500.jpg

5.54pm
Sheepy sheep.

splash3_1500.jpg

6.17pm
Back at the house. The younger peeps really felt the heat by this point, and Mr Famapa was more than happy to help them cool down.

sisters_1500.jpg

6.19pm
It’s good to have a sister who’ll help you get warm afterwards.

splash2_1500.jpg

6.20pm
Warm enough to have another go that is.

splash1_1500.jpg

6.21pm
Oomoo’s turn! He either filmed this or took a picture at the same time - I want to see how it came out.

three_1500.jpg

6.22pm
I love this picture. Oomoo’s cropped head, all of them in their own worlds but together, that green and the deep long shadows.

plane_1500.jpg

6.58pm
There’s an army base not far from the village, and we saw lots of unfamiliar looking planes fly over.

r_1500.jpg

9.29pm
After dinner we tried a round of Balderdash, but we were all too fried for it to be fun and had to give up.

It’s so nice to be behind here, so I can prolong summer a bit. I don’t know about you, but for us it felt that it went by in a flash, even though we didn’t get up too much. In fact, I can’t believe we’re already in the ninth month of the year. 2020, what a strange year you have been.

An evening constitutional

church_1500.jpg

In our further UK travels this summer we went to my father-in-law’s house in the Cotswolds (which this is obviously not a picture of!) for a few days. We managed to time it just as it was the hottest week of the year, which felt very unfamiliar, as we’re normally there in autumn/winter. Staying in an old house with thick stone walls was PERFECT in that heat. After dinner on our first day there, we went out for a walk to stretch our legs and also because the temperature was finally more agreeable.

2.1_1500.jpg

Mr Famapa and his friend C have known each other since they were about 4, which is a reeeeeaaaally long time, as we’re nearly a hundred years old now. Almost? Ok ok ok, nearly half a hundred.

flies2_1500.jpg

Something funny happened as we were walking. Oomoo and R had a permanent cloud of flies above their heads for the whole walk, and we thought it must be down to them being sweaty from running about. Or just being smelly kids? Haha.

flies_1500.jpg

Best to get your dad to try and disperse them.

rocks_1500.jpg

“Photo-op!”.

handstand_1500.jpg

There is something so wonderful to see large expanses of fields and skies again, after having being cooped up in the city for so long.

fluffy_1500.jpg

One of my fondest memories from my childhood are the after dinner evening walks we’d go on as a family in the summers every now and again. There was something so special about being out a bit late, taking in things you’d miss if you were just parked on the sofa watching TV.

sunset_1500.jpg

Our decision to go for a walk was a spur of the moment thing, and it turned out to be pretty special. We looked at this sunset in awe, I mean, wouldn’t you?!

silhouette_1500.jpg

So glad we made that decision as I will cherish this walk for long time. Maybe even for half a hundred years - if I’m lucky.
